It hits you, but you feel no pain, instead, pleasure. This is the visceral experience of audition, to be immersed in an auditory volume, swimming in a sea of sound, between cliffs of speakers towering almost to the sky, sound stacked up upon sound.
The Only Good System... is dedicated to the history and present of bass culture. The festival, curated and conceived by Zuri Maria Daiß and Pascal Jurt, deals musically and theoretically with the materiality of sound systems. Besides an evening hosted by The Bug/Kevin Martin, the bass tanks of the artist Nik Nowak compete against each other in a sound tank clash. On a club night at YAAM, artists who are devoted to the bass and dub archive will perform. In addition, different aspects of sound system cultures, sonic warfare and paths of hybrid production, reception and distribution channels in keynotes and panels will be illuminated. The festival will be rounded off in autumn by the first European showcase of the legendary Wackies label with performances by Lloyd “Bullwackie” Barnes, Claudette Brown from Love Joys, Wayne Jarrett and Milton Henry and many others. In cooperation with Terraforma Festival in Italy.

21:00 LECTURE DIEDRICH DIEDERICHSEN
Diedrich Diederichsen, German author, cultural critic, and Professor for Theory, Practice and Communication of Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna played dancehall and roots reggae together with Gerd Gummersbach as part of the DJ duo Dreadbeat until the mid-1990s. 19:00 - 21:30 SOUND TANK CLASH BY NIK NOWAK
Sonic warfare will be brought on in a sound tank clash by Nik Nowak. Nik Nowak is a German artist, musician and curator interested in sonic affects. His research examines the role that sound systems play as cultural transmitters and acoustic weapons. Nowak will present his new sonic behemoth “The Mantis”, a two-ton sound sculpture that rears up in a biomimetically hydraulic manoeuvre, preparing itself to do battle with Nowak’s earlier “Panzer” at a height of four meters. There will be live musical interventions by Nowak, as well as by She’s Drunk (a grime, R&B and ballroom project launched by Berlin-based French producer David Monnin) with queer New Yorker Le1f. There will also be performances by Infinite Livez from East London, up and coming rapper Ché and ALI.Keys from Detroit plus Awa Khiwe, one of the most interesting female voices of African Hip-Hop.

18:00 KEYNOTE CAROLYN COOPER | RADIALSYSTEM
Carolyn Cooper, a feminist, Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies and author of the books Noises in the Blood: Orality, Gender and the "Vulgar" Body of Jamaican Popular Culture (1993) and Sound Clash: Jamaican Dancehall Culture at Large (2004). The Skype talk will be about the sound system clash as an arena in which warring selectors detonate their arsenal of dubplates and establish dominance in the field. In Jamaica, the sound system clash becomes a warning signal indicative of contestation over public space in the wider society. Lyrics are the weapon of choice in this war, as the letter of the law clashes with the permissive body language of the streets. The dancehall sound clash enacts literal and metaphorical class warfare between uptown and downtown, between ‘decency’ and ‘vulgarity’, ‘culture’ and ‘slackness.’
The Skype conversation will be moderated by Klaus Walter
20:00 - 06:00 CLUB NIGHT | YAAM
Only artists devoted to the bass and dub archive are invited for the Club Night on Easter Sunday. At Yaam, they will show that between 50, 120, 140 and 160 beats per minute lie entire musical worlds, from trap, house, drum 'n' bass, (roots) reggae, (post-) dubstep, future bass, 2 step, dancehall, UK garage, ghetto tech and rags to wonky and grime. On the Lion’s Den sound system, they will make sure the visitors will be swimming in bass.
